Iron County Michigan Genealogical Society

Meetings

Meeting Thursday, February 2, 2011, 1:00 pm West Iron District Library.

The Society holds meetings on the first Thursday in the months of April through December at the West Iron District Library's Conference Room.  For the months of January through March we hold informal gatherings due to the possibility of poor weather conditions and many members traveling to warmer locations.  We dub them "snowbirds".  Business is not conducted at those meetings but the subjects of the meeting are in the areas of research, learning how to use programs as well as the Internet.  These meetings are held at 1:00 p.m.  At times we schedule special gatherings.  The local newspapers and radio station, in addition to flyers being placed on area bulletin boards announce the program.  All meetings are open to visitors.

ICMGS meeting recaps are included in the newsletter.

Iron County (MI) Genealogical Society has been meeting to help promote genealogy and help others discover how to research their ancestors since 2002.

Meetings are held the first Thursday of each month at 1:00 P.M. at the West Iron District Library. Watch the newspapers for programs.

Membership is $15/per year for single or $25 for family, includes a bi-monthly newsletter.

RESTHAVEN CEMETERY TOUR
Cemetery Tour Presenters
On June 8, 2011, the 4th annual cemetery walking tour in west Iron County was held at Resthaven Cemetery in Iron River, with 51 people participating, including some coming from as far away as Texas and Hawaii. Dale Safford, Iron County's "Cemetery Lady," shared many historic facts about both the cemetery and many people buried there. Assisting her were seven local residents who shared family heritage and genealogical data. Pictured from left are presenters Kim Stafford, who talked about an unrelated person; Arlene Manfredi, who talked about her grandmother; assistant Bob Weeks; Safford, cemetery tour coordinator; Tom Brzoznowski, who talked about his great-grandparents; Debbie Nieminen, who talked about her great-grandfather, a Civil War veteran; Sandy Tegge, who talked about her grandparents; Carol Erickson, who talked about her father-in-law; and Lisa Karwoski, who talked about her father. The tour was sponsored by the Iron County Genealogical Society and the Iron County Historical Society. (Safford photo)
