About Us
The Iron County Michigan Genealogical Society is made up of a group of individuals dedicated to helping people find information about their past.
History of ICMGS:
A group of individuals interested in genealogy met at the West Iron District Library in May, 2002, in order to compare notes and share our interest with each other. We used the name of Iron County Genealogists until we felt it was necessary in July, 2004 to form officially. We adopted the name of Iron County (MI) Genealogical Society. We went under the umbrella of the Iron County Historical Museum so we might be able to be a tax-exempt group. Because of the arrangement we are responsible to the Museum but
our funds are separate and we do have a representative on the Museum's Board. We try to supply volunteers to the Museum, especially in the area of the Archives, but also in other areas.
We also try to support the West Iron District Library and their volunteer group, Friends of the Library. Both groups have been helpful in encouragement and support for our group. Many of the genealogy members work in one or both the Library or/and Museum.
